Salary negotiations play a major role during the application process. More on that in our blog post: Salary negotiations in job interviews – teamFORCE

But what comes after that? How do you develop on the job and negotiate properly?

Objective

Before taking any steps regarding a salary negotiation, it is essential to set goals for yourself and to know what you want and why. A salary negotiation can only be conducted if you can define and justify your demands. Please note:

  • Visualize your goals!

It doesn't matter whether you document your demands and wishes manually or electronically, etc. If you define your goals and minimum and maximum salary for the salary expectations, you know exactly what expectations you have when you go into the interview and you may come up with other important points that you want to bring up when documenting them.

  • data check

In order to argue objectively, it is important to obtain all relevant information in advance. Give a specific number that you have calculated based on research and your market value and experience. Prepare "why you deserve a raise" arguments beforehand.

time and place

The right framework conditions for a salary increase should not be underestimated. In principle, you adapt them to your corporate culture. For example, if you work in a bank with clear guidelines and hierarchies, it is not advisable to seek the conversation in the canteen. Accordingly, it is best to announce yourself to your supervisor so as not to be an unexpected disruption. In this way, everyone involved can prepare themselves and time is taken for the salary negotiation.

According to a study by McGill University, you are more likely to get a better result on a Thursday. However, adjust the schedule to your superiors.

Negotiate with confidence

The appearance and the first impression determine the course of the conversation. Create a relaxed atmosphere at the beginning by having a light conversation with questions.

Emphasize the benefits

Be confident in your performance and present yourself accordingly. Focus on your market value and past and potential future successes. Positive and self-confident arguments also emphasize the strengths of the negotiator. Stay professional and have the courage to convince with facts and your skills and guarantee your dream salary.

"Negotiation is action."
