screen break

Screen break - this is how you give your eyes a break

Whether answering e-mails, internet research or creating protocols or project plans. During working hours, you often spend more than three hours a day in front of the screen. Do you pay attention to the health of your eyes? No? Then you should read our blog article.

The fact is: VDU work is hard work for the eye. Why? The eyes are simply strained too long. The consequences of this are usually dry, irritated or red eyes because we blink less often when working on the screen than we should. Certainly not a pleasant feeling for anyone.

How to prevent overworked eyes

Regular breaks prevent these complaints and are therefore essential. You should therefore take the legally prescribed screen pauses of 10 minutes every 50 minutes to relieve your eyes. Eyes that have been fixed at the same distance for a long time are always happy about variety.

How do I really relax my eyes?

The following exercises help to relax the eyes during the screen pauses:

  • Near-far vision 1:Hold one index finger about 15 centimeters in front of the nose, the other another 15 centimeters behind. Look slowly and evenly from one finger to the other.
  • Near-far vision 2: Fix a pen in front of your nose about 30 centimeters away. Then the view should wander into the distance, scan various objects and return to the pen.
  • Close eyes: Close your eyes for a few seconds while working on the screen. Try to blindly write short sections of text now and then.
  • Relaxing facial massage: Close your eyes, rub your hands lightly together until they feel warm, and then slowly and gently stroke in large circles, starting from the forehead to the left and right down to the cheek towards the chin, along the nostril back towards the forehead. Repeat the facial massage a few times.
  • palming: Rub your hands together until they feel warm. Place your palms over your closed eyes and feel the warmth of your hands. Breathe out and breathe in for a minute or two. Then slowly open your eyes again.
  • Eyelid massage: Place your thumbs on your temples and use your index fingers to massage the top of the eye socket from the root of your nose.
  • Horizontal eight: Close your eyes and perform a lying figure eight with the tip of your nose about twenty times, change direction after ten times.
  • Occasional yawning: Leave the lower jaw open, breathe in deeply through your mouth, and yawn heartily! This tension and relaxation stimulates the facial muscles pleasantly!

You should also create these general working conditions

  • Pay careful attention to the location of the screen. It makes sense not to position the screen directly in front of the window so that the window is reflected in it.
  • The screen background and environment should not be black. Otherwise the brightness adjustment of the eye is disturbed.
  • Put flowers on. Flowers or green plants near your work place relax your eyes.
  • Adjust the brightness and contrast of the screen to your individual needs.
  • Pay attention to the distance of the screen. There should be a minimum distance of 50 centimeters.
  • Ventilate the room. Fresh air stimulates blood circulation and helps the eyes to relax.
  • Pay attention to your workplace design. Ergonomic workplace design helps to keep eye strain to a minimum.

Another tip

Avoid reading electronic texts on the display device for a long time. The eye muscles relax over time and impair vision. Instead, print out longer texts and read them on paper. If you still want to read on the screen, get a flat screen with a sufficient screen size.
