Definition

Remote work is a form of work that is done from a location other than the company's place of work - usually as long as there is an internet connection. One also speaks of telework, home office and mobile working, whereby these variants are sometimes equated in linguistic usage or an attempt is made to work out fine differences. The Vienna Chamber of Labor, for example, makes the following distinctions:

  • Telework: exercise of the activity outside the premises provided by the employer and use of information technologies
  • Home office: Regular performance of work in one's own home, not only using information technology, but also working with other work equipment, e.g. B. the processing of paper documents is included
  • Mobile working: the place of work can be chosen freely, even outside of the company workplace and your own four walls, so you can also work in a café, on the train or at the outdoor pool, for example.

Whatever form is chosen in a company, a written agreement is not only strongly recommended, but in some cases already required by law. Provisions, for example in the area of employee protection, the Working Hours Act and the Work Rest Act, now also apply to remote work.
