The professional resume

The flagship of every application

The CV (Curriculum Vitae or CV for short), together with the cover letter or letter of motivation, is a fixed point in every application. It is used by your potential new employer to initially assess your skills. A CV in the form of a table, which shows at a glance your personal key data, your professional career and the training and further education activities you have completed, is now the preferred standard.

Try changing your perspective! What do you expect as a hiring manager who reads a lot of resumes every day? The essential information must be visible at a glance - clarity, completeness and a good structure of the content! The structure should be concise and factual and clearly answer all possible questions about your career.

Content of the CV (recommended structure)

  • About the person: first and last name, date and place of birth, citizenship.
  • Contact details: So that HR managers have all the data at a glance, it is recommended to include your name, email address and mobile phone number at the beginning or in the header or footer.
  • Photo: Have a photo taken that you can identify with. It shouldn't be more than a year old and should definitely have been done professionally.
  • Education: completed education including degree, duration and date of completion
  • Professional career: Professional steps must be clearly presented (duration, company, location, task, responsibility and, if applicable, budget, employees and results). Start with the last/current position and proceed in reverse chronological order.
  • Additional qualifications: Please do not exaggerate here - optimal are those that relate to the advertised position.
  • Knowledge and skills: Enter your language level according to the Common European Framework of Reference, IT skills, driving license, etc.
  • Interests: Avoid listing everyday hobbies. Hobbies make sense when skills are taught that meet the requirements of the job offer.

General

  • All times in the curriculum vitae must be exact (month / year)
  • Make sure there are no gaps in your CV.
Times without employment should be clear (e.g. unemployed in Nov 2006).
  • If you have had several short employments (e.g. just a few months or individual years) in different companies, there is a risk that you will be sorted out early in the selection process. Avoid this and explain the specific reasons for the termination of the employment relationship.

And finally ... Take your time and write a professionally designed document that leaves a positive impression at first glance. Unfortunately, few applicants still pay attention to a clear and attractive design of their CVs. It's definitely worth investing some time here, otherwise you risk not being invited to an interview.
